Notes of a Native Son Analysis Essay Sample
Notes of a Native Son Analysis Essay Sample James Baldwinâs âNotes of a Native Sonâ (1955) is a non-fiction book of essays that present his reflections on race relations in the United States of America. It is a collection of previously published ten essays that appeared in different periodicals. âNotes of a Native Sonâ share Baldwinâs thoughts on how to solve the United States racial dilemma, and expresses his ideas on the issue of American identity. The essays represent different genres. Some of them are memoirs, for example, a short essay âNotes of a Native Sonâ where Baldwin describes his relationships with his father. Other essays offer critique. For example, âMany Thousands Gone âis an example of literary criticism and âCarmen Jones: The Dark is Light Enoughâ is an example of a film analysis. Summary Letâs start with âNotes of a Native Sonâ summary. The book has three parts. The first part is criticism, the second one is personal, and the third one describes his expatriate experience. This division serves only as structuring device because the major themes of the book are present in every essay. The first part of the book that includes three critical essays is devoted to the aesthetic problems. James Baldwin shares his views on the role of an artist and his image within the traditional cultural canon. He argues that an artist should not aim at representing an entire group or champion the social changes but mostly describe his own experience which any artist knows well enough to be able to speak with honesty and deep insight. He does not suppose that writers should write only memoirs, but his opinion is that all genuine works of art should be based on an artistâs own experience. Thatâs why he criticizes Richard Wright, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Otto Preminger and their works such as Native Son, Uncle Tomâs Cabin, and the film Carmen Jones. James Baldwin does not consider them great works of art because they do not present a personal experience. The second group consisting of three essays focus on sociopolitical issues. It is a journalistic and anecdotal part of the book. It includes an essay about Harlem ghetto, another one describes a journey of African American musicians to Atlanta, and the las one is devoted to Baldwinâs relationship with his authoritarian preacher father. The last part of the book includes four essays that discuss questions of identity and deals with race issues in America and Europe. They arose in a new way when Baldwin was abroad. The last four essays discuss Baldwinâs experience of living in Europe. Analysis âNotes of a Native Sonâ can be best understood as a book of a young writer who is searching for his own voice, for identity, and is struggling to find a way to reconcile his contradictory views that were determined by his experiences as an American, as a black man, and as a writer. Baldwin wrote elegantly and honestly about his main challenge that was to understand and determine what it meant to be a ânative sonâ. Baldwin discusses the race relations in America and speaks about racial prejudice in the States. He makes an attempt to analyze the prejudice, understand where it comes from, and decide how to deal with the racial prejudice. And he does it in different ways, one of which is using personal experience. We are living in an age of Black Lives Matter, and James Baldwins âNotes of a Native Sonâ that tackle problems of life in Harlem, discuss the protest novels and movies, and life of African Americans abroad are as important, urgent, and powerful today as in the 1940s and early 1950s when they were first written. âNotes of a Native Sonâ established James Baldwin as a strong interpreter of crucial social changes in the United States in the twentieth century and as a social critic. The essays create an interesting sketch of Black America and show Baldwinâs search for his unique way to identify himself as an artist, as an American, and as a black man.

Life Without Love is Like a Body Without Soul - Free Essay Example
While the word ââ¬Å"valueâ⬠is always used to express the monetary worth of something as a price tag, yet using the word in the context of life has a totally different meaning. By the same token, the word ââ¬Å"lifeâ⬠seems to be quite simple. However, if you look at it closely, you will see that itââ¬â¢s a very complicated thing with various components resembling a spider web with threads intertwined into a tight tangle. Everyoneââ¬â¢s life is unique and is directly correlated to the choices he makes and experiences he goes through. One is the master of his own life and how valuable and meaningful his life will evolve to be depends on his actions and decisions. In my view, the most important values in life are time, succes, and love. While some people are so busy that they do not have enough time to live, others are more balanced and know how to manage time across all aspects of life and are willing and able to appreciate things as they have them i.e. living life right the first time, as they live once. They enjoy living their lives to the fullest extent and make the best out of it. It is only by doing so that they would come to know what they are in love with and how good they are at it intuitively following their heart and curiosity ââ¬Å"guts feelingâ⬠while learning from their own mistakes and sharpening their knowledge over time. People have different perspectives on what the value of life is. In my view, however, oneââ¬â¢s value of life not measured by how effectively he had contributed to the well-being of himself and people around him. In the journey of success, one should keep setting up new challenges ââ¬Å"staying foolish and hungry and thinking outside the boxâ⬠to unlock the internal potential and find out what he is truly capable of doing. However, he can come across several hardships, which could at the first glance appear to be a catastrophic failure, but eventually turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to him, as people tend to take a fresh look on their lives only once stroke by adversity ââ¬Å"the bullet that does not kill you, makes you strongerâ⬠. This serves as ââ¬Å"eye openerâ⬠for not taking the life for granted anymore. Resilience and perseverance are the ââ¬Å"name of the gameâ⬠for counteracting a setback and faith and deriving strength from loving what you are doing. Life is valued by love and family relationships. Life without love is like a body without soul, as life is nothing but a network shared with others and the sense of life is to give love, as feel ing loved and cared about is a key happiness factor. In conclusion, life should be treasured and lived to the maximum extent taking advantage of each and every experience and memory so that it is enjoyable learning and emotional journey.

All Drugs Should be Legal for Personal Use Essay - 946 Words
All Drugs Should be Legal for Personal Use The war on drugs is costing us over 100 billion dollars to fight each year, and weââ¬â¢re only fighting a monster which we are making bigger with each punch. Itââ¬â¢s not drugs, but drug laws themselves that have created this monster. Drug use is part of human nature, but the unimaginable wealth involved leads to the corruption of the police, judges, and elected officials. There is no reason to have the government regulating what goes into an individualââ¬â¢s body. An extreme case of what weââ¬â¢re letting the government do is letting them take away our own self, an individualââ¬â¢s ownership over his own body. I think itââ¬â¢s in everyoneââ¬â¢s interest to legalize all drugs, since this war is going nowhere, lettingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This simple concept the government does not seem to understand. Each time an agency makes a drug bust, it makes the monster bigger, the drug more profitable. Revenues for drug trafficking in Miami are greater than those from tourism exports, health care, and all other legitimate businesses combined. The only way to kill this monster is to make it collapse on its own weight. By legalizing drugs the whole black market would crumble, making illegal drugs as expensive as prescription drugs, the whole world economy would also benefit greatly. South American countries could finally get out of debt by legally exporting drugs. There is no way that the United States is going to stop the whole world from producing drugs. When they paid Turkey to stop the growth of opium, production merely shifted to Southeast Asia and Afghanistan. Drug use has been in human history, and no law of any kind is going to stop humans from experimenting with drugs. Alcohol, one of the most dangerous drugs, a drug known to trigger violent behavior, and cause 40% of all car accidents is legal. This seems to be hypocritical of the government, and itââ¬â¢s racist since throughout history the white man has predominantly used alcohol. Marijuana use for instance was largely confined to people of non-European descen t, and thatââ¬â¢s what made it relatively easy for the first marijuana laws here in the United States to be passed some 60 years ago. Drug offenders account for more than 60% of theShow MoreRelatedA Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and Other Drugs1239 Words à |à 5 PagesA Call for the Continued Prohibition of Marijuana and Other Drugs Alcohol, if consumed in high quantities, poses serious personal and public health and safety issues. Some people even take the drug daily as a therapy to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.Read More Caribbean is a Strategic Transit Zone1343 Words à |à 5 Pagesrestricted budgetary allocations for drug rehabilitation (Evaluation of Progress in Drug Control Report, 2010). Finish Your Degree by Enrolling in an Online School
If youre an adult learner with past college experience but no degree, you might be able to complete your studies by enrolling in an online school. Many online colleges cater to professional adult students wanting to transfer previous credits and earn a degree in less time than a traditional 4-year program. Heres what youll need to do to finish your college degree online: Make sure online learning is the right fit for your lifestyle. Online college isnt a good choice for everyone. Successful students must be able to balance their virtual classes with other responsibilities. They must be able to learn independently, without a teacher giving them personalized instruction and motivation. Additionally, online learners must be competent writers and have a high level of reading comprehension. The majority of online courses are reading- and writing-intensive ââ¬â those lacking these skills might find themselves overwhelmed, even if they excel at the subject being studied. Find an online college. If you plan to use your degree in the workplace, it is important that your online college is regionally accredited and that it maintains a good reputation. Youll also want to find a program that fits your schedule. Some online colleges require students to log in to a virtual classroom at a certain day and time. Other colleges allow students to work at their own pace, without any scheduled meetings. Make sure your credits transfer. As an adult learner, youll probably want to enroll in a college that accepts transfer credits. You might want to consider applying to one of the big three credit-bank colleges. These online schools are regionally accredited and are known for having flexible credit-application policies. They happily work with students to apply old credits to new degrees. Choose a major. You might decide to keep your original major, or you might choose to study something completely different. Keep in mind that if you have a lot of subject-specific transfer credits, choosing a new major could substantially increase the time it takes to earn a degree. Some fast-track college completion programs offer only a limited selection of majors. Generally these majors are in subjects such as general studies. A degree in such a generic major might hurt you when applying to industries that require training in a specific field. However, most jobs that only require a bachelorsââ¬â¢ degree, should accept generic majors with no problem. Submit your transcripts for review. Once youve been accepted to an online program, youll need to have all your previous school transcripts sent to the colleges admissions office. Most colleges do not accept personal copies of transcripts. Youll probably need to have your previous schools send official, sealed transcripts directly to your new college for a nominal fee, usually $20 or less. Ask for transcript review clarifications. After the initial transcript review, speak up with any questions and concerns you have. If you believe that a particular class should be counted toward a requirement, ask about it. You might be able to petition for an additional review, and potentially saving you time and money. Complete the courses required for graduation. Your online college counselor should provide you with a list of required classes. Follow this list and youll be well on your way to completing your college degree. Going back to school as an adult learner can be a challenge. But, if youre motivated and prepared, completing your college degree online can definitely be worth it.

General Guidelines For Help Undergraduate Students Write...
These are general guidelines to help undergraduate students write better essays. *Note that every assignment is different. You should take the time to closely read the instructions and meet with your Professor if necessary. BEFORE YOU START Make sure that you have closely read the instructions as presented by your Professor. As stated before, there are many different types of historical essays (argumentative essays, historiographical reviews and so on). It is imperative that your style is adapted to the type of essay you are required to write. Gather all your information. Some Professors want students to write essays using only class material, others expect them to do more research. If the latter, make sure to gather all (most) of your information beforehand. If you are a university student, you normally have access to a library and many academic journals. Use this access and make sure to ask librarians for help when needed. Take careful notes as you are reading in preparation for your essay. If your Professor provided a specific question, make sure to read critically for information that is susceptible to help you answer this question. If your Professor has not assigned a specific question, you should still read carefully and try to find the different ways in which historians address certain issues. Some students prefer not to plan others do. I suggest planning as it may be the best way to map out your ideas and begin forming an argument. Arguments Against Physical Machines Jenna Beran - 1280 Words
Arguments Against Physical Machines Jenna Beran In A Contemporary Defense of Dualism, J. P. Moreland challenges the problem of mind and body. He uses the terms intentionality and subjectivity to argue that humans are not physical machines. Subjectivity is the opinions and feelings from experience that is unique to the individual. Intentionality describes how thought can be directed on a particular object. This is consciousness. These terms are what make human beings distinct from physical machines. Moreland argues that human beings are different from a physical machine because humans have a mind that uses intentionality and subjectivity. Moreland compares the intentionality and subjectivity of physical things to the mind. Humans are able to think about desires and beliefs with the use of intentionality. We are not just a bundle of nerves that take in sensory information and give feedback because of the intentionality of the mind. Instead, human beings are able to process the sensory information, and give feedback through unique opinions. The combination of consciousness and experience are what makes every human unique in the world. When looking at a physical object like a computer, it doesnââ¬â¢t have the characteristics of subjectivity and intentionality. The computer does not have subjectivity because it cannot feel emotions. The computer also doesnââ¬â¢t have intentionality because it cannot express its beliefs. Humans can envision objects that do not really exist such as a

Marx vs Gilman free essay sample
Marx argued that the goal of intellectual work such as his was to change the world; an opinion obviously shared by Gilman since she was also on a mission to change the world, for women. Gilman is known for her humanist-socialist perspective but, I believe that her theories also share a similar quality to Marxââ¬â¢s conflict theory. Whereas Marx sees the conflict, or class struggle, being between the bourgeoisie (the owners) and the proletariat (the workers); Gilman sees the conflict, gender struggle, between men and women. Marx advocated social reform for the proletariat (workers). The focus of Marxââ¬â¢s conflict theory is that by eliminating privilege, the overall welfare of the society can be increased. This would then create a true equality amongst members of a society. He argues that privileged groups are working to maintain their privileges, while the disadvantaged are constantly trying to attain more. The owners are making all the profit while the workers are, basically, trading their labor for bare necessities like food, shelter and clothing. Gilman advocated social reform to women, similar to that urged earlier by Marx to workers. She recognized the inequalities inherent in the social structure of the working world which excluded women from most jobs, confining them to the world of the home where they worked all day, every day; their only compensation being the roof over their heads. They had no income over which they had complete control; and this is the situation she called on them to remedy. Although Gilman was a feminist, she believed that both men and women were victims of the damaged social structure. Women are forced to lead restricted lives, and this serves to limit their human progress; while, men suffer from behaviors that their cultural habits of dominance and power have told them are social norms. Therefore, both are victims of the social norms created by society. This concept of ââ¬Å"equality of blameâ⬠also parallels Marx. Although he advocated for the rights and equality of the mistreated workers, he also argues that the owners were victims of the overall social structure. Society created the social classes and deemed them normal; therefore, both the owners and the workers were only playing their designated roles. The main difference in the theories of Marx and Gilman is in how we will reach this social change they preach about. Marxist philosophy is based on revolution, while Gilmanââ¬â¢s is based on evolution. Marx believed that, through class consciousness, the workers would eventually recognize they were being exploited, and put an end to privilege. That they would revolt against their oppressors and end Capitalism once and for all; and a new utopia of equality under Communism would emerge. While Gilman believed that, women would not have a revolution against the men, but we would ââ¬Å"evolveâ⬠into equality. Society would over time, as women became more economically independent, balance its injustices. Then, women would finally be free to develop as individuals, and to offer their untapped resources to their families and society as a whole. So, in modern day society, if we have ââ¬Å"evolvedâ⬠or ââ¬Å"revoltedâ⬠into equality; why are women still paid less than men in the same jobs? What would Marx and Gilman have to say about the subject? Even in the 19th century, Marx pointed to the tendency for capitalism to make super-profits from the exploitation of women and children. He wrote: The labor of women was the first thing sought for by capitalists who used machinery. â⬠(Marx, Capital) He would argue that the capitalists constant attempt to increase the rate of profit, has led to the ever increasing employment of women. The capitalist system regards women merely as a convenient source of cheap labor. Since, in the past, women were conditioned by class society to be politically indifferent, unorganized and passive; they are easily taken advantage of. They believe that women wonââ¬â¢t complain like the men do, because they are weaker. Therefore, they can pay them less and increase their own profit margin without hassle. And, despite all the talk about a womans world and girl power, and despite all the laws that supposedly guarantee equality, women workers remain the most exploited and oppressed section of the proletariat. Gilman would, no doubt, rejoice in the fact that so many women are out of their homes, in the work force, and independent from men; regardless of any pay differences. And, she would surely embrace the idea of ââ¬Å"womanââ¬â¢s worldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"girl powerâ⬠; and see this as proof that she was right and that women were evolving. I theorize that she would be less concerned with the pay differences as long as women could still be economically important and independent. But she would see the pay differences between men and women as yet another stumbling block on the way to equality; another way that the patriarchal society is oppressing women by showing their power and dominance as men.

Everyman His Own Historian free essay sample
Carl Becker, author of Everyman His Own Historian, explains in his own words the meaning of history. Becker uses a narrative and facts to support his position. Becker begins by dissecting the textbook definition of history. The definition of history begins as, ââ¬Å"the knowledge of events that have occurred in the pastâ⬠, and later Becker develops the definition to, ââ¬Å"history is the memory of things said and done. Becker supports his change to the original definition by analyzing the actual words used. For example, Becker replaces knowledge with memory. His argument is that memory is needed in order to recollect knowledge. I agree that theses two aspects work hand in hand. Becker further goes on to analyze the words memory and past in the same format. Becker also uses a short narrative to explain the fact that technically every thing is history as soon as it is done. Substantial history is only made if someone believes that the event or fact is relevant or important and gets others to believe it also as Becker goes on to explain, ââ¬Å"Left to themselves, the facts do not speak; left to themselves they do not exist, not really, since for all practical purposes there is no fact until some one affirms it. Abortion Debate Essays - Abortion Debate, Sexual Reproduction
Abortion Debate In Roman times, abortion and the destruction of unwanted children was permissible. As our civilization has aged, it seems that such acts were no longer acceptable by rational human beings, so that in 1948, Canada along with most other nations in the world signed a declaration of the United Nations promising every human being the right to life. The World Medical Association meeting in Geneva at the same time, stated that the utmost respect for human life was to be from the moment of conception. This declaration was re-affirmed when the World Medical Association met in Oslo in 1970. Should we go backwards in our concern for the life of an individual human being? The unborn human is still a human life and not all the wishful thinking of those advocating repeal of abortion laws can alter this. Those of us who would seek to protect the human who is still too small to cry aloud for it's own protection, have been accused of having a 19th Century approach to life in the last third of the 20th Century. But who in reality is using arguments of a bygone Century? It is an incontrovertible fact of biological science - Make no Mistake that from the moment of conception, a new human life has been created. Only those who allow their emotional passion to override their knowledge can deny it: only those who are irrational or ignorant of science doubt that when a human sperm fertilizes a human ovum a new human being is created. A new human being who carries genes in its cells that make that human being uniquely different from any and other human being and yet, undeniably a member, as we all are, of the great human family. The entire fetus needs to grow into a baby, a child, and an old man, are time, nutrition and a suitable environment. It is determined at that very moment of conception whether the baby will be a boy or a girl; which of his parents he will look like; what blood type he will have. His whole heritage is forever fixed. Look at a human being eight weeks after conception and you, yes every person here who can tell the difference between a man and a women, will be able to look at the fetus and tell me whether it is a baby boy or a girl. Who will pay for there abortions? With Medicare, of course, it is you and I. I know one full pregnancy costs most than an abortion, but not much more. And it does not cost more than three abortions that is what happens when the climate or choice for life or death of the unborn child changes. Let us use this money for constructive purposes, not destructive. It has been suggested that abortions on request would enable the poor to secure abortion as easily as the rich but regrettably, it has been shown that abortion-minded physicians in great demand will respond to the age-old commercial rules, as has already happened in the States and in Britain. Abortion on demand a women's right to choose not to continue an unplanned pregnancy would prevent there being unwanted children in this country, so we are told. This is the final and desperate emotional plea of people anxious, at whatever price, to escape the responsibility for their actions. Nobody here or in Canada, wants there to be unwanted children in this city, and in this country, and also in this world. There is nothing more pitiable or heat rending that an unwanted fetus becoming an unwanted baby or an unwanted baby becoming an unwanted child, or an unwanted child becoming an embittered adult. But few would think it right to kill or have killed an unwanted baby to prevent it from becoming an unwanted child. Then how can they think it right to kill an unwanted fetus, even more defenseless than a newborn baby just because it may grow into an unwanted child. Once a women has conceived, she already is a parent, be it willing or otherwise. The only way she ceases it be a parent is by a natural death or an act of killing. Killing in any form is not the solution to so-called unwanted human beings at any age. Hitler thought this was right. Canadians surely do not. It is a permissive and frightened society that does not develop the expertise to control population, civil disorder, crime, poverty, even its own sexuality but yet would mount

Prostitution in Cuba essays
Prostitution in Cuba essays Despite Castros effort to reduce prostitution and sex tourism, these problems still remain in Cuba. Many articles report that these efforts have not helped because of other regulations around the world. A John Hopkins University report says Canadian and American tourists have contributed to a sharp increase in child prostitution and exploitation of women in Cuba (due to) a current drop in political restriction on travel to Cuba and a crackdown on sex tourism in Southeast Asia (Calzon). These factors have encouraged more tourists to travel to Cuba for sex because they know that Castro will allow them to get away with it. American policy towards Cuba is another factor that has influenced the continual increase in prostitution in Cuba. Castro has been able to use the United States policy to build hostility against the US to justify actions that are not helping Cuba at all. This hostility increases the fear of ordinary Cubans that the US might invade or that right-wing Cuban-American exiles will return from Miami to Havana and take back their property (Esler). Esler went on to say that year on year the conditions for ordinary Cubans get worse, rations down, prostitution up. Tourism, of course, also plays a big role in the staying power of prostitution. With so many people coming to Cuba for this reason, it is difficult to stop an industry which helps the economy so much. The New Republic reported in June 2000 that the government has even begun referring to these women as promoters of tourism (Kielly). Other than for sex, it is thought that few people would visit Cuba if given the chance. The sex, of course, is what most of the tourists come to Havana for. Have no doubts about this. Theyre not here to show solidarity with 40 years of continuous revolution, or to study architecture, and they certainly arent here for the food (Kielly). ...

Gender Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 3
Gender - Essay Example From this paper, it is clear that interpretations are irrefutable since improving men and womenââ¬â¢s status has been a pledge by the lawmakers and supported by governments as a beginning of tasks on gender. It is evident that women have suffered considerable biases since gender issues are concerned, through policies, media, literature, folk songs, and customs. However, religious teachings and mythology have played an essential role in promoting gender awareness and equity. Favoritism, double standards, and attitudes in the society are the regular reminders of inequalities experienced in the modern world (Marshall, 2000).Gender as social phenomena aroused by the differences in our biological makeup has taken by storm the public domain on major issues politicized (Hobson,2002). Nevertheless, citizens of upright religious practices consider gender as not being critical since they cherish their differences. Contrary to my opinion, gender issue has become a concern, since my childhood girls were treated more respectively compared to boys Gender has been taken lightly to some extent whereas in other cases exaggerated. Documentation of male and female in records such as the birth certificates should not be a cause for any alarm for the sake of peace. Our dressing and genetic makeup always been a problem in that ladies have always been perceived as putting on attire that is meant for men, thus a form of disrespect. To some societies like ancient Greece and Rome, cross-dressing was rampant as the norm. There is a slight difference on perceiving gender through expressing ourselves. Despite our biological differences as human beings, we have similarities that profits all (Marshall, 2000). Normally our bodiesââ¬â¢ change as we grow towards maturity is when the difference is noticed clearly. Civilization has brought with it complications in the freedom of choice whereby people are altering their gender (Fenster & Lees, 2002). This practice has received mixed reactions from both parties involved.

Distance Learning Techniques in Organizations Essay
Distance Learning Techniques in Organizations - Essay Example Some more numbers below put into perspective the growing trend in distance learning (Sloan consortium): Among companies also, there are similar trends emerging which show that organizations are increasingly shifting their thinking towards distance training. According to Dr. Amy Finn (Chief Learning Officer at Centra Software), ââ¬Å"smart organizations know that e-learning is a strategic solution that must be deployed throughout their organization. It is no longer a question of ââ¬Å"if,â⬠but ââ¬Å"when.â⬠e-learning is becoming and will continue to be a part of the organizational infrastructure, similar to mail packages and other suites of products used to increase organizational productivity.â⬠The method of training is being changed from the traditional classroom training in order to reduce travel and per diem cost. In order to be focused and relevant, we need to first define what we are trying to achieve. Therefore, we could define the scope of ââ¬Å"training from distanceâ⬠as: Having identified the various instructional media and techniques, we can now look in details the pros and cons for each. This would help identify the most suitable technique to undertake in different situations. There are two types of learning environments depending on whether or not the trainees receive the inputs at the same time as the trainer imparts the training. If the trainees receive the inputs at the same time as the trainer imparts the training, it is called asynchronous learning environment.Ã

Globalisation: Threats and Benefits for SMEs
Globalisation: Threats and Benefits for SMEs INTRODUCTION Globalisation has become a hot discussion issue for both academicians as well as the corporate world. This is because of the effects globalisation has on Small medium enterprise as well as the benefits they offer to the SMEs and national economies as a whole. Globalisation is a major driver that has an impact on nearly every business due to internationalization of markets. Technological progress in distribution and other logistics enables every business to buy and sell at a global scale. Small Medium Enterprises contributes to over 50% of the national GDP and provides over 60% of the total employment in most of the developed high income countries. Small and Medium Entrepreneurs play a major role in creating economic growth in every country through job creation (UNCTAD) .Despite small businesses being engines that drive economic growth in most economies, smaller firms in developing countries are greatly disadvantage in terms of growth and profitability due to globalisation. 1.0 What is Globalisation? Globalisation refers to the shift towards a more integrated and independent world economy (Hill 2003) .Globalisation has two main dimensions thus Globalisation of markets and Globalisation of production. 1.1 Globalisation of markets refers to the merging of separate national markets into one global market which is aimed at reducing cross boarder barriers making it easy to sell and buy international (Hill 2003). However cavugil et al -defines Globalisation of markets as a gradual integration and growing interdependence of national economies. It is also aimed at standardizing products worldwide and a means of converging customer preferences. Its therefore important to note that this is a gradual process which started as far back as 1830 has been done in phases. The integration has resulted in the formation of regional bloc e.g. the European Union, SADC in southern Africa, COMESA just to mention a few. Integration is where two or more countries in the same geographical area make an alliance with a view of reducing barriers to trade and invest to grow their economies. This implies that the lowering of trade barriers enables firms to view the world as one global market rather than a singl e market. 1.2 Globalisation of production is the sourcing of goods and services from countries around the globe to take advantage of national differences in the cost and quality factors of production. China is a good example of emerging markets with low labor costs. With globalistaion, this has seen most firms moving their production centers to china to reduce costs and this has enhanced their economies of scale. By doing this, firms aim to gain competitive advantage as globalisation has resulted in increased competition in the global market. Globalisation productions not limited to giants like Boeing but smaller firms are getting into the act as they aim to lower costs and increase their profit margins. Why GLOBALISATION-There are many reasons why nations globalise. 2.1 Nations globalise to reduce barriers of trade and investment .This means that the absence of barriers has enabled firms to have access to the total market resulting into a wider selection of choice of goods for customers. On the other hand globalisation has resulted into the formation of regional blocks where governments get into agreements so as to eliminate the hindrances to trade freely among the member countries This has not only reduced barriers of trade but also have enhanced the bilateral relationships between member countries. Globalisation is one way of liberalizing markets meaning its one way of opening up markets with minimal government indulgence. Its believed that globalisation creates opportunities to advance in technology and this has resulted in creating efficiency for firms and has brought about innovation which enables firms compete favorably. The other reason why nations globalise is that its easy to integrate world financial markets. As the world is merging business transactions are becoming more simplified e.g. the sourcing of funds from foreign firms have been made easy. However, globalisation has its own benefits and threats especially to small firms 3.0 Benefits of globalisation to smaller firms-.Globalisation has its own pros and cons however its important to note that it has been quite beneficial to smaller firms in various ways. Globalisation has created opportunities for smaller firms to make alliances (merge) with other small firms enabling them access expertise from other countries and creating synergies to achieve competitive advantage. Smaller firms have also benefited greatly from technology mostly brought by globalisation of markets. Communication has become easy as it i possible to transact with different countries within a short period of time. More knowledge about production methods, management techniques, and economic policies are easily accessible at very low costs which is a valuable resource especially for developing countries. Globalisation has resulted in increased investment in business even for small firms due to easy sourcing of funds globally and supports small firms get from other supranational authorities Globalisation has opened doors for small businesses to export their products .Some statistic show that 90% of exporters are small businesses this has helped infant firms have wider market for their products and services. It has also created an opportunity for Small firms to compete on an international scale 4.0 Threats of Globalisation to SMEs Critics of globalisation argue that although there are benefits associated with globalisation, its also apparent that Smaller Medium Enterprises are threatened by globalisation in different ways: With the opening of boarders which has seen a number of MNEs in most countries offering lower prices, small firms are forced to sell their goods and services at lower costs as it is the only way they can compete and this has a negative effect on their profitability. Its has also increased spending for research and development in market entry as it takes a much higher proportion of total spending smaller firms than in larger businesses. Opening up of boarders has resulted in mass migration. This entails that countries loses some of its best talented and skilled people which in turn could mean reduced pool of Human resource SMEs can choose from. Globalisation has also brought about stiff competition from Multi National Entrepreneurs investing in various countries. With globalisation most governments especially in developing countries have policies benefiting MNEs and disadvantaging smaller firms in their quest to attract foreign direct investment. It is because of these threats that governments and supranational authorities have to come in and protect the smaller firms from being swept away. 5.0 What are supranational authorities? These are international governing bodies empowered to regulate international trade and investment .Their main objective is to save collective interest of member states. 5.1 Roles of Supranational Authorities-Supranational authorities play key roles in integration of market as they are aimed at solving common economic problems facing different countries including smaller firms. Examples of these authorities which play major role in protecting smaller firms include; World trade organisation, World Bank, International Monetary fund, African Bank for Reconstruction and development (ABRD) etc, these authorities work hand in hand with governments from various countries to see how poverty can be reduced and creation of jobs enhanced. This includes protecting smaller firms from effects of globalisation and ensuring that they are not swept away by the presence of multi national enterprises since they are the drivers of most economies today. 5.1.1 IMF: The international monetary funds main objective is to raise living standards of its member countries by ensuring that countries can sustain themselves without much dependency on donor funding. Its aimed at fostering global monetary cooperation and secure financial stability by stabilizing exchange rates. If the exchange rates are stabilized its easy for the nation to attract foreign direct investment. International Monetary Funds also facilitates international trade and promotes high employment and sustainability of economic growth with the ultimate goal of reducing poverty. This means that IMF encourages member countries to adopt sound economic policies to promote entrepreneurs in member states especially developing countries so as to help them grow their economies. Once these economies have grown it will mean they become self reliant and employment created for the citizens and IMF would have achieved its goal. 5.1.2 World Bank: The World Banks mission is to fight poverty and improving the living standard of people in developing countries www.worldbank.org. To achieve this, the bank provides low interest loans to different organisations to help funding various projects. Not only to organisations but the bank also offer grants to governments to run various projects in different ministries. World Bank provides advice on implementation of various policies that benefits the different economies. It also offers technical advice to both low and medium income countries on how economies can be improved thereby reducing poverty. The World Bank partners with governments to come up with projects as a way of promoting growth in the economies which leads to job creation .The other reason is to empower smaller firms so that they can explore the opportunities arising from globalisation. The World Bank has other major wings thus the International Bank for Reconstruction and development (IBRD) and the international development association which work primarily with governments to support private businesses in developing countries. Besides the above two wings discussed there is also the international development bank which offers advice on how to access IDB financed contracts 5.1.3 World trade organisation: World trade deals with rules of trade between nations to avoid exploiting one another .World trade ensure that there is fair trade between the trading nations and that trade should not benefit one nation at the expense of the other. The main goal is to help producers of goods and services conduct their business in a fair and transparent manner. This includes Multi national enterprises and smaller firms alike 6.0 Role of Government in protecting small firms Although reasons for economic stagnation vary, several factors point out that many developing countries have economic policies that destroy wealth rather than creating wealth. Its for this reason that Government should come up with policies protecting smaller firms from exploitation as they contribute greatly to the growth of the economy. However this task should not be left alone to supranational authorities but it calls for efforts of various governments to work hand in hand with these authorities to achieve the main goal. In as much as globalisation has benefited most economies of various nations globalisation still poses challenges to many businesses especially infant firms in developing countries. Government therefore should ensure that these infant firms are protected from threats and or exploitation brought about globalisation of markets and production .Its also important to highlight that government needs concerted efforts from all stakeholders thus the private sector to come aboard in helping small and medium firms thrive through stiff competitions. Government can support smaller firms through the implementation of policies in support of smaller firms in form of financial and technical assistance so as to prevent small business from being swept away by todays global economy. This can be through offering tax incentives which can be in form of tax rebates. Government can support smaller firms by injecting capital into these small firms. For example in Zambia there is a government project called the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (C.E.E.C) aimed at encouraging youths and Zambian small entrepreneurs to become entrepreneurs and grow their businesses. It provides loans to small entrepreneurs so that they can grow their businesses and compete effectively. Entrepreneurs are asked to come up with project proposals which are then submitted to C.E.E.C for evaluation. After the evaluation process then they are advised as to weather the project is viable of not and are advised accordingly .if they are sound a loan is given to them after submission of the relevant documents. Government can introduce market linkage through global trade centers to buyers abroad this will help ensure that there is always ready market for small firms products .In most instances small firms may have the product but no market for them at they end up selling their product cheaply without making profits to reinvest .Trade centers on the other hand will do the research on behalf of the entrepreneurs and advises them on how to add quality to their product to meet the international standards and all the logistics should be put in place. In Zambia, the government through the ZDA offers a service of market sourcing for emerging SMEs. Development of good road network system is another way government can come to support these firms. This is because most small firms find it hard to transport their product to market places due to poor roads .This is most applicable in developing countries like Zambia where small firms especially those dealing with agricultural products have problems transporting their produces to major markets where there are better offers hence they end up selling these products cheaply Government can also work hand in hand with local banks and help reduce interest and lending rates so as to enable small firms have access to loans to finance their business this will ensure growth to this infant firms. Government can also come up with policies where small entrepreneurs especially in the agricultural sector sell direct to the Food Reserve Agency (F.R.A) at a profitable price. This will deter buyers seeking to exploit them with lower prices. Smaller firms fail to compete effectively due to lack of planning. Most of them fail to come up with comprehensive business proposal plans as a result they have no direction on how to compete. This is where governments co-operating partners can come in to help by running workshops so as to give them direction. The Government Republic of Zambia offer such training through a government wing called Zambia Development Agency (ZDA). For firms in the exporting business government can offer incentives in form of invoice discount or warehouse receipts this will encourage more smaller firms to venture into exporting which is a way of expanding their market and is less risky and cheaper that foreign direct investment. Government should also introduce price sealing to deter multi national Enterprises from exploiting market for infant firms seeking to use the cost leadership strategy as a means of entering the foreign market. This will ensures there is protection of the home grown products as there is a floor limiting price factor Governments from the same regional blocks can introduce one stop boarder post where small entrepreneurs are allowed to cross over with goods and with no tax on certain goods. In the SADC region for example ,Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe have signed this agreement although its not as effective as it should be If all these measures are put in place and necessary policies are implemented by the government and its stakeholders then smaller firms will survive from globalisation threats and will eventually be translated into economic growth and increased gross domestic product ratio. CONCLUSION In conclusion, as globalisation has progressed the living conditions have improved significantly in almost all the countries. However the strongest gains have been particularly on high income countries (developed countries) and only a few in developing countries. This is because low income countries have not been able to integrate with global economies quickly as the developed countries partly because of the policies implemented in various nations and other factors beyond their control. Every country should seek to reduce poverty thus encouraging entrepreneurship by strengthening their financial muscle so that they can withstand stiff competition amid globalisation. This is the only way to ensure that smaller firms have access to benefits of globalisation and reduced threats. Finally for as long as Small Medium Enterprises lack financial support, with poor infrastructure and lack of government assistance and support ,small firms will continue being threatened by globalisation and eventually will be swept away. This will have an adverse impact on the economy as small firms are the back bone of the strong economies. RECOMMENDATION The Government of the Republic of Zambia must increase the allocation to the wings responsible for youth and entrepreneur project e.g. the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission and should be encouraged to lend to women groups and have the collateral to borrow from banks as most of this government wing offer too little to small firms and cannot borrow from high interest Banks due to lack of collaterals. Policies that protect local manufacturers should be strengthened by developing country governments. This is because currently the laws and regulations on this angle are too weak as a result investors source raw materials from their country of origin and not from local suppliers. There is also great need for governments to enhance education, training and research and development to promote productivity among small firms through its cooperating partners. This could be an opportunity for small businesses to acquire right skills in dynamic economies. Other policies should include structural reforms to encourage domestic competition. If local firms can compete domestically it helps improve product and service standard thereby preparing them to compete internationally. Developing countries should lobby from rich countries to relax restrictions for developing countries to export into European and western markets. This can be done through bodies like SADC, COMESA and A.U. There is a better chance of being heard if they speak with one strong voice. Supranational authorities should introduce parallel lending specifically for small firms so that funds are not diverted. They should also channel funds for capacity building which helps instill know how to infant firms so that they can compete effectively. Supranational authorities should work hand in hand with Non governmental organisation by funding various projects e.g. when it comes to running workshops. They should also lower interest rates to small firms to enable them access loans with minimal interests. APPENDICES chart1a chart2b

Analysis ââ¬ÅOn Being Humanââ¬Â Essay
C.S. Lewis gets straight to the point in his first lines, particularly with the first two words ââ¬Ëangelic minds.ââ¬â¢ Readers will discern immediately that Lewis is going to discuss the concept of experience from the viewpoint of supernatural non-human beings such as angels. Readers may also guess, by comparing this idea to the poems title ââ¬ËOn Being Human,ââ¬â¢ that he intends to go on to compare this idea with our experience of the world from the implied lowliness of mankindââ¬â¢s perspective. Students may wonder where the latter implication comes from, and in this, at the beginning of the poem at least, C.S. Lewis is no help at all in referring to a mysterious ââ¬Ëtheyââ¬â¢ who apparently hold that angels use intelligence alone to comprehend the forms of nature, not needing the added senses enjoyed by more sensate humankind. Some readers may be reminded here of the fierce battles between the angels and demons of Milton or the ââ¬Ëarrows of desireââ¬â¢ of Blake. Indeed the nature of love and its forms was thoroughly explored and analysed elsewhere in the Four Loves by C.S. Lewis himself. As he outlines his argument in the next few lines, readers are left wondering which way Lewis is going to go with this. They may wonder which dimension of experience the poet will say is best ââ¬â intelligence or sensory experience? Here, the idea of an enigma or puzzle gives the poem drive and suspense as students read on to find out what happens next. Initially C.S. Lewis presents, and continues to develop, the theory that those with purely spiritual, non sensual minds can unerringly discern crucial timeless truths, ââ¬Ëthe veritiesââ¬â¢, through intelligence alone, without recourse to the five senses. Humans either lack knowledge of these truths or have come to learn them indirectly through the implied less satisfactory means of sensual experience. Truths of nature seem to be given particular weight by Lewis here as he tells readers of ââ¬Ëearthnessââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëstonenessââ¬â¢ that can be perceived by angels from their clear uncluttered viewpoint ââ¬â uncluttered by the supposed inferior extraneous baggage of mortal sensate feelings and experiences. Both in Lewisââ¬â¢s use of the word ââ¬Ëunvaryingââ¬â¢ and in his use of the word ââ¬Ëunerringlyââ¬â¢ in the opening lines, some readers may pick up echoes of the Roman Catholic belief in the infallibility of the Pope and the unwavering adherence to doctrine of the Roman Catholic church ââ¬â even in the face of calls for relaxation and modernisation by common popular dissent. This serves to reinforce the notion of the fundamental nature of ancient truths. Being human, Lewis seems to ponder, may result in a clouding of the vision of fundamental principles by a veil or a muddled fog of distracting sensual experiences. It is at this point that the reader may perceive a divergence in Lewisââ¬â¢s view with that of the poets, theologians and philosophers of the ââ¬Ëtheyââ¬â¢ in his initial lines. In his list of the understanding of the notion of ââ¬Ëbeing,ââ¬â¢ of existence, ââ¬Ëbeing humanââ¬â¢ is left out! The angels appear to understand the scientific principles of the beauty of nature, the properties of a tree for example, or the evaporatory properties of the sea, but their achievements in the field of understanding human existence are not mentioned. C.S. Lewis then sketches, with exquisite delicacy, the human experience of the blissful coolness of shade as relief from the blistering unrelenting glare of the sun and, next, the severance of sun from shadow where the trees begin. This use of the word ââ¬Ëseveranceââ¬â¢ also serves to mark the point where Lewis breaks faith temporarily with the ââ¬Ëtheyââ¬â¢ of the first lines as he introduces humor, remarking that an angel has no skin and therefore (presumably) no conduit for the sense of touch. Then follows a series of ravishing images, deftly painted by Lewis, of the ââ¬Ëdrinking-inââ¬â¢ of experiences of natureââ¬â¢s loveliness ââ¬â such as the sweetness of a peach basking in the warmth of a sunlit wall or the delightfully natural fragrances of the countryside. Here Lewis picks up again the comical atmosphere that underlies the conversational narrative style of the poem, adding that angels are unable to appreciate the delights of the fragrance of the field, new mown hay, the sea smells and the therapeutic incense of wood smoke. With humor he bluntly posits that an angel has no nose! The poet then appears to struggle between two possibilities ââ¬â firstly that angels get the best deal as they are not burdened with the five confusing senses. Conversely, he wonders whether humans are the better off of the two beings. After all, they are guarded from the shock of perceiving the whole of existence ââ¬Ëthe heavensââ¬â¢ at once, because mankindââ¬â¢s distracting senses obscure the truth of it. Crucially, in terms of understanding Lewisââ¬â¢s own opinion on the subject, the poet draws attention to the way in which God himself may want us to have one small area of our personalities devoted to appreciating the environment through our senses. Perhaps in so doing we are the better able to comprehend the sheer scale of the wonders of nature and sense that He has provided for our happiness. The angels with their cold intelligence may be unable to profoundly appreciate, thank and love God to the full. Indeed, some lines from the Roman Catholic church service, ââ¬ËThe Massââ¬â¢, may spring to mind when reflecting upon the benefits this ââ¬Ëbeing humanââ¬â¢ has in our relationship with God ââ¬â the lines refer to a Christ ââ¬Ëwho humbled himself to share in our humanity.ââ¬â¢ As Lewis puts it, we ââ¬Ëshare a privacy that is forever ours, not theirs.ââ¬â¢

Individual Assignment on Research Methodology Essay
The problem that the article covers is obesity. According to Reynolds, obesity involves an inbalance of the caloric intake to energy expenditure, meaning that more calories are consumed than are burned, which causes weight gain. But obesity is more than a simple equation of weight and height; itââ¬â¢s also a complex health issue involving genetics, hormones, culture and environment (Reynolds, 2011). Obesity has been a huge problem for lots of individuals. The discussion of obesity has been studied for a while. Individuals have been trying to find new ways to decrease or eliminate obesity. In the article, recommendations, solutions, treatment methods, and causes are presented to help decrease the percentages of obesity around the world. Study Purpose The purpose of the study is to inform and persuade the reader. It seems as though the author and researchers set out to make everyone aware of the risks associated with obesity and present them with ways of getting healthier. Researchers want individuals to get healthier. They have saved a lot of lives by raising awareness. While reading the article, I was informed on many things I did not know about obesity. It has motivated me to become healthier and guide my children down a healthy lifestyle. The main goal of the article is to draw attention to obesity and try to motivate individuals to make successful changes to their diet or exercise. Hypothesis There isnââ¬â¢t really a direct hypothesis stated in this article. The author and researchers only include facts and statistics throughout each paragraph. Study Variables Throughout the article, people are the study variables. The body mass index of individuals is depended upon how much they are active and what they eat. The body mass index is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. A normal BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9, overweight is 25.0 to 29.9, obese is 30.0 to 39.9 and morbidly obese is less than or equal to 40 (Reynolds, 2011). The healthier an individual becomes, the lesser their body mass index becomes. Body mass index should be identified every once in a while, for health purposes. Conceptual Model The conceptual models used in the article are medical images. One example of the medical images related to obesity is ultrasound. Images of ultrasounds are provided to identify how obesity can affect them. Ultrasound is the most impacted by obesity. In heavy individuals, experts recommend that the lowest possible frequency probe (2 MHz) be used because ultrasound energy is most attenuated by fat at high frequencies (Reynolds, 2011). Another example used in the article is a sonogram, which is also affected by obesity. Sonograms can be affected during the care of pregnant women because of obesity. Image quality is affected if the mother has a high body mass index, located within the 90th percentile. Many medical images and screenings are provided in the article. Review of Related Literature Many people have had concerns about obesity. Some believe itââ¬â¢s hereditary, while others mainly believe itââ¬â¢s due to lack of exercise and bad eating habits. The truth is that obesity is based on the calorie intake and amount of activity. However, obesity can also be hereditary. Genetic factors can affect appetite, the rate at which you burn energy (metabolic rate) and how the body stores fat (Henderson, 2011). The related literature consists of information on obesity prevention, various obesity statistics, and the measurements of body composition in overweight individuals. All provide helpful tips for the readers and should be applied to daily life. Study Design Qualitative and quantitative researches are both used in the article. It focuses on the percentages of obese individuals, body mass index, gastric surgeries, etc. However, it also focuses on the quality of information. The author goes into the reasons for obesity and how it can be prevented around the world. Both approaches are useful and have made the article more informative. The subjects used in the article are mainly children and women, who are located in different areas around the world but the information has been gathered from all types of individuals, no matter the age, ethnicity, or gender. The duration isnââ¬â¢t identified. Obesity is an issue that needs to be effectively approached. There are several programs and services, used to help obese individuals get back on the right track. Some of the health problems associated with obesity is diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Itââ¬â¢s fantastic that articles are being printed, discussing issues related to obesity. Schools have also taken steps to decrease childhood obesity by adding healthy vending machines and lunches. The healthier people become, the better their lives will be.
